“Both as drama director and documentary producer Judith Kampfner manages to get to the heart of the stories she makes for radio. In the documentaries this is due to the gentle and yet searching interviews that form the basis of the narrative. The structure that her imagination then places on that narrative to make it a compelling 'listen' draws the listener deep into the lives and minds of the people involved.”
Richard Bannerman, Former Editor, Documentaries, BBC Factual. Presently Executive Producer, Ladbroke Radio.
"I can think of no one else who can produce science stories with that blend of story telling and sound that is the hallmark of memorable public radio.
I have worked with Judith on a variety of science documentaries since 1996, when she first came to us with a story about the early space program in the United States. After Dogs and Chimpanzees was a reminder of how far space science has come since Project Mercury. Judith found seven of the first participants in Project Mercury and beautifully wove together their stories of their long learning curve in the then new science of astronautics.
That first program for Soundprint was a precursor for a much larger series we produced in 1999 called Exploring Space Science. This thirteen part series funded by the National Science Foundation, covered science from the earth to the heavens. Judith produced six programs for that series. Her work took her to the labs of some of the most pre-eminent scientists in their field. She followed farmers as hey leaned how to use satellite data more effectively, doctors as they worked to discover new ways to help the elderly, and was the fist producer I have ever heard explain the principles of gravity in a clear and concise way. This series was one of the most popular Soundprint has produced, and good deal of its success is due to Judith’s work.
The key to her success lies in her keen ability to communicate effectively with a large team. Documentary work is always a collaborative effort – and this is particularly so when it addresses science topics. The National Science Foundation funds many of the programs Judith has worked on for us. Part of the production process with these programs includes working closely with a group of science advisors. For our specials and other programs she manages a small flotilla of advisors, production staff, and editors with great assurance.
Judith is able to transform complex ideas into an intimate, accessible experience for the listener. That is, of course, one our major goals in public radio."
